Selection Policy

Selection Policy

  • Selection for senior section league matches will be made by the selection committee.

  • The selection committee will consist of: Head of Cricket , First Team Coach, Saturday 1st XI captain or vice-captain, Saturday 2nd XI captain or vice-captain, Sunday XI captain or vice-captain, Women’s captain or vice-captain and U19 T20 Team Coach once that competition commences.

  • Decisions will be made by the committee and not by any individual. However, where issues cannot be resolved, the final decision will be made by the Head of Cricket, who will be consulted.

Mission statements for each team:

Sat 1st XI: To play as high a standard as possible within the Two Counties Championship, with a view to ultimately gaining promotion to the East Anglian Premier League.

Sat 2nd XI: To play as high a standard as possible within the Two Counties Championship. To provide support to the 1st XI in developing players ready to play 1st XI cricket and where appropriate, allowing individuals from the Sat 1st XI to find form within their specific skill area.

Ladies & Girls XI: To be as competitive as is possible within the league structure, all female players (Senior and Junior) will be considered for selection – where more than 11 players are available for selection, preference will be given to those players 16 years and over.

Sun XI: To provide the opportunity for both new and established members to play adult league cricket; to integrate junior members into senior cricket. (Where more than 11 players are available for selection, preference will be given to those players who have not played on the Saturday or players in need of practicing their primary skill if not getting that opportunity on the Saturday. During the Junior season, where the junior players are training and playing games midweek for their respective age group(s) Schools and County sides , priority will be given to adults who have not played on the Saturday). When the side plays friendly games on a Sunday, a side will be selected accordingly to allow junior players another opportunity to develop their skills in addition to a large number of junior fixtures they are already playing in.

U19 T20 XI: To be as competitive as is possible within the league structure, all U19 players will be considered for selection – where more than 11 players are available for selection, preference will be given to those players 16 years and over.

Points That The Club Will Follow During Selection:

1. Decisions will be made primarily to help the sides in achieving their mission statement objective(s), following that, the selection committee will seek to look after the developmental needs of its individual playing members.

2. Every attempt will be made by the club to accommodate the desires of individuals. However, players are asked to support the mission statements of the club and each team and understand that their personal desires may, at times, be secondary to the fulfilment of these missions.

3. Should players or parents have an issue with selection, in the first instance, they should speak to the captain/coach/ manager of the team for whom they are selected. If an issue remains, they should contact the Head of Cricket.

4. Selection meetings will be held in the club house at 7.30 pm on the Tuesday prior to a Saturday fixture. Each captain will “enter” the selected XI onto the club web site and distribute the automatic “selection e mail” no later than 7pm on the Wednesday following the selection meeting.

5. In accordance with the mission statements for each side, club policy will be to select the strongest Saturday 1st XI, first, followed by the Saturday 2nd XI, T20 XI and Sunday XI. Consideration will be given to: known availability, performances in competitive cricket, training , conduct, attitude , player development, player safety and the volume of cricket played by Junior members prior to the senior game in that preceding week.

6. Non-payment of subs by the end of the specified period will result in the player(s) non-selection until subs are paid

7. It is the responsibility of the player to inform the captains of their availability, preferably via the club web site “availability” page at least two weeks before selection. It is the individual captains’ responsibility to check availability each week before the selection committee meeting.

8. In cases when a player is to move teams from the previous week, the team Captain , Coach or Head of Cricket will liaise with the player to give a full explanation for this change.

9. Players have the right to inform the selection committee of their skill preferences (batting, bowling, position, etc.) the selection committee will take that into consideration when selecting the sides.

10. Once selected and informed, a player who refuses to play for the team in which they have been selected, without good reason, may forfeit their rights to future selection.

11. Should a player drop out after selection, the captain of the team should select from the team immediately below in consultation with the Head of Cricket.

12. While priority is given during selection to the Sat 1st XI, Captains from lower teams can question selection should it lead to an imbalance in their team (e.g. no competent wicket-keeper, insufficient bowling for 40/50 overs).

13. Should a player become available after selection, he/she should only be selected should a drop-out occur.
